As a kid I was raised in a Pentecostal denomination where glossolalia was as common in church as Cadillacs were in its parking lot. Not only were you a far superior Christian if you spoke in tongues than those "rookie" believers who had not been "filled" with the Holy Spirit, but your conspicuous material consumption (exhibited as ostentatiously as your puiblic practice of the "gift" of tongues) was proof that you had been blessed by God for living the right way and were therefore His favorite. Funny thing was that these same righteous people were all for killing "godless" communists in Vietnam, turned a blind eye to the squalor of the poor, hated hippies and generally behaved as Pharisees. I wonder how many of them will find themselves damned in hell in spite of their belief that the Lord Jesus is their personal savior? And things haven't changed that much since the 1960s. The hippies may have grown up but "God's people" must despise gays and keep them from marrying, help kick out "illegals," and support Bush's immoral war in Iraq (if for no other reason to keep the "family safe" gas hog SUV's tanks full at a lower price.) I mean really, what should Jesus do?
